  • Common Mistakes for DIY Home Remodels

[caption id="attachment_8640" align="alignleft" width="300"]Avoid the Remodeling Hassles! Avoid the Remodeling Hassles![/caption]

Before throwing on a tool belt and rolling up your sleeves to dive into a home remodeling project, make sure to cross all your t's and dot all your i's to avoid getting too far into a project and realizing that you're in over your head. Doing some homework before getting down and dirty into a project will save you an amazing amount of trouble down the road. Common mistakes that DIY home-improvers can often make are:

    1. Neglecting to get a permit. Flying under the radar and building without proper permitting may seem like a good money-saving idea at first but it will come back to haunt you and your project. There are fees and fines associated with failure to obtain the proper permits that will end up being more than the permit itself. And if you're adding on a room, the extra square-footage of your home will not be reflected without notifying your city's Building Office.
    2. Buying "its too good to be true" hardware. My adage has always been: If its too good to be true, it probably is. And you'll spend more time putting it up, taking it down, returning it, and picking out a new one than you would if you had just bought  the higher quality hardware first.
    3. Not hiring a contractor for the big jobs. Unless you're prepared to tango with a myriad of subcontractors, its a mess that you would usually pay a general contractor for because sub-contractors don't usually talk or coordinate with each other. The general contractor is there to orchestrate the comings and goings of all the sub-contractors and make your life a lot easier.
