Now that the weather is getting colder, one of the most important things you can do is to make sure your roof is in good condition. With the rain approaching, your roof will probably become a nesting ground for moss. One way to prevent this is with Zinc Strips. These metal strips are inserted on your roof, and when it rains, the particles of zinc dissolve into the rain water, running down, coating your roof. This scientific process inhibits any future growth of moss and algae.
You can buy these zinc strips at any local hardware store. For installation, give Reilly Painting a call, and we can inspect your roof to make sure it's ready for winter. Here is some more information on Zinc Strips:
General Information: Zinc strips are usually considered the long-term solution to controlling mosses. Zinc strips and galvanized flashing are apparently relatively safe and inexpensive. They effectively kill the growth of mosses and fungi and appear to have effect up to 15 feet below the zinc flashing along the length of the flashing.
Effectiveness: Zinc strips are considered to be effective for up to one year for most brands. The effect of galvanized flashing can persist for decades. Success rates vary with the degree of moss development and weather. Zinc strips or flashing are most effective before mosses are well developed. Physical removal of existing moss followed by installation of zinc strips or flashing is an effective long-term strategy for suppressing moss growth.
