    When renovating or restoring a beautiful old home, it’s understandable to pause before updating the old windows to modern ones, even if they are drafty and leak air during the winter. Replacing windows can be very expensive, especially if the original windows are nonstandard sizes; but the energy loss through the windows can be detrimental to your enjoyment of your home, and your wallet when the utilities bill comes.

    A professional in the same situation, Kevin O’Connor, the host of This Old House, wanted a way to seal the drafty old windows of a 1894 Queen Anne Victorian (which are amazingly beautiful homes). However, this came with a $1,000 price tag on each window in the house. Attempting to keep the integrity of the house without paying this exorbitant bill meant that O’Connor had to think within his limits.
    To fix the problem, he needed a product that was both effective and unobtrusive. “I didn’t want anything that would change the way the old windows look,” he says. The solution: a simple weatherstripping kit that uses the same types of seal found in modern windows and is practically invisible.
    Getting to the root of the problem, O’Connor found himself with a solution which both allowed for a long-term fix, the ability to keep the original handblown windows, and a price-tag to fit any budget.
