  • Let’s Get Serious About Organizing The Attic

    [caption id="attachment_2694" align="alignleft" width="371" caption="Don't Let Your Attic Get Like This"]De-clutter[/caption]

I don't know about you, but it seems that every time somebody organizes our attic, a month later it looks worse than it did before! Why is that? Is it because the attic has the reputation as the "junk room," or because it's the one room guests never see? Now that summer is over, you will undoubtedly be heading up to your attic to retrieve coats, gloves, blankets or Halloween decorations. Why not take some time now and get rid of the junk you don't need, and get that attic looking clean and organized. It will make finding things so much easier! If you don't have the time to really de-clutter your attic or any major room or garage in your home, Reilly Painting are pros at de-cluttering and organization.

Chances are, if you have an attic, basement or both in your home, you use these areas as storage for old clothing, toys, bedding and whatever else you may have wanted to keep over the years. Here are a few tips to keep your storage areas clean and organized.

    • Eliminate clutter in your storage spaces. Throw away or donate items that you don’t want, need or can no longer use. If you’re never going to use them again and they have no other value to you, then there is no need to store them in what little space you may have.
    • Periodically check on the status of your storage area and the items you have been storing. Try to do this either every season or every six months. You may have kept an item by reasoning with yourself that you were going to need it in the future, but if six months or a year have passed and it is still where you originally put it, it is time to let it go.
    • Designate a certain amount of space dedicated to storage. If you go over your allotted space, you need to sort through your belongings and get rid of some things.
    • The area that you choose to designate for storage should be an out of the way place. For example, if you have your laundry machines in the basement, don’t put your storage items in the way of the machines. This will become a hassle, since you may have to navigate around the storage each time you want to do laundry.
    • Buy plastic storage bins to put your belongings in. Put a label on the bin detailing what is inside of it. If you have a lot of bins, buy them in a few different colors and color coordinate all of your storage items by designating a color for clothing, toys, etc.
