In my scatterbrain days, I liked things to stay exactly where I left them or else I'd be late, running around the house looking for my keys or jacket because someone moved them. For years, "the couch" was a good place for my jacket to go when I took it off, or "the kitchen" was a good place to leave my shoes after class. I soon realized that public or high-traffic areas were not good places to leave my belongings and that I was simply just causing clutter and messes.
After moving into a shared house, my goal was to make it a place where my housemates and I felt at home and I found that clutter made people feel uncomfortable and anxious. It started to dawn on me that having unnecessary things simply sitting around takes away from the functionality of said room. This lesson was learned in the kitchen as well. Taking notes from this article from HGTV, I rediscovered the importance of my kitchen, and what the impact of a messy kitchen had.
A mess in the kitchen meant I had to clean before I cooked, cook, and then clean again. Knowing that fact made it much easier for me to order out or go out to eat and end up spending $5-$10 on a meal when I could make something at home for less than that and have it feed me for multiple meals. Starting a new year means turning over new leaves and why not kill three birds with one stone, saving money, eating better, and maintaining a cleaner home?
