Carlos Couturier arrived at the first stop on his shopping trip on a bicycle, although the temperature in New York City was well over 90 degrees.
So it was appropriate that he was looking for fans. Mr. Couturier, the 51-year-old founding partner of Grupo Habita, a company that owns 12 hotels in Mexico and the Hôtel Americano in Chelsea, needed to cool off.
At Bed Bath & Beyond, he found a number of options, from high design to the most utilitarian.
The Dyson models on display, which circulate air without blades or any visible moving parts, were “cool,” he said.
But Mr. Couturier, who grew up in Veracruz, Mexico, with “all sorts of fans — they are part of our culture,” and uses them in almost all his hotels, seemed to prefer a more traditional design.
“I like this,” he said, moving toward a row of small Vornado fans with adjustable tops. “It is good for a desk, especially in an office where you don’t have windows.”
His favorite of the lot was a large industrial-looking metal floor fan from Stanley, with a wall-mount option.
