The recent tornadoes and severe weather have inflicted a lot of damage to communities, homes and stores in the South. The increase and demand for safe rooms or storm shelters have risen dramatically over the last few weeks. Kim Severson of the New York Times discusses how these storm shelters are becoming more and more popular for families and schools living in areas where tornadoes are not only common, but very destructive.
Gloria Jones climbed out of a relative’s storm shelter in an Oklahoma City suburb on Wednesday night and saw only rubble where the house used to be.
Eight people and two dogs had packed into that shelter, dodging a tornado that killed at least 10 people.
As soon as she gets over the shock of the disaster and helps her neighbors get back on their feet, she will order a shelter for her own house.
“I won’t go through that again without one,” she said. “It saved our lives.”
