Thanks! Your crew was great. Bruce was especially thorough, skillful and polite. A great job by all and the best paint job we've ever had. See you in the fall!

  • John Mangels: Full Time Science Writer, Part Time Sky Diver

[caption id="attachment_2974" align="alignleft" width="266" caption="Plain Dealer writer John Mangels with Jumping Partner Joe Jones"]Sky Diving[/caption]

John Mangels is more than a science writer....he occasionally sky dives at the Cleveland Air Show too . Mangels, a writer for the Plain Dealer Science Section, had the chance to sky dive over Cleveland with the Golden Knights during the Cleveland National Air Show this past weekend. The Plain Dealer was right there in the action, recording this amazing footage. Here is his story:

CLEVELAND, Ohio — I'm poised in the open doorway of an Army Fokker C-31 as it lazily circles the Cleveland lakefront. From 2 miles high, Browns Stadium is the size of my watch face. Way down below, it's summer's last 91-degree gasp, but up here, it's January cold. Some of the Army's Golden Knights parachute demonstration team gulp hits from an oxygen tank to counteract the thin air.

I'm securely hitched to Staff Sgt. Joe Jones , an easygoing, golf-loving Airborne Ranger and veteran of more than 4,500 jumps. He's the leader of the Tandem Team, the man who'll gently shove me into the slipstream and deliver me from nearly half the height of Mt. Everest.

As the paper's science guy, I know a lot about what's ahead. Newton's second law of motion lets me calculate our top falling speed, 120 mph – also ominously known as terminal velocity.
