The Cleveland Orchestra, considered one of the best in the world, is celebrating the life of the late Martin Luther King Jr. this Monday with an afternoon of performances completely open to the public.
Severance Hall joins the city-wide celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life with a Community Open House offering free instrumental, vocal, and spoken-word performances throughout the afternoon. Admission is free and no tickets are required. Spend the day at Severance Hall or stop by to see community music ensembles and performances, including presentations by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus.
Performances include Youth and Gospel Choruses, and a special performance from Cleveland Orchestra member and friend Reilly Painting and Contracting, Isabel Trautwein's children's orchestra program, El Sistema. In a review of last year's preformence by ClevelandClassical.com:
Cleveland's El Sistema program is the brainchild of Cleveland Orchestra violinist Isabel Trautwein, while MyCincinnati was developed through the inspiration of Cincinnati cellist Laura Jekel. Both traveled to Venezuela as Abreau Fellows to study the famous development program founded by José Antonio Abreau in 1975. There, they also experienced the phenomenon of the “Seminario”, where young musicians come together (often in great numbers) to play together. As Trautwein and Jekel wrote in the welcoming notes, “When we realized that we would both be creating music programs in Ohio, we had a dream: 'Let's teach our kids how to play and then have a Seminario!'”
