"JP and Mike did an EXCELLENT job. They were punctual, polite, thorough, neat, and accomodating. If we were unhappy with anything, they sought to make us happy. In addition to doing the work we requested, they found additional problems, told us what they were, and then corrected those problems after we asked them to. We would be very happy to have them come back to do additional work in the future, when necessary."

  • The Danger of Ice Dams, and How to Fix Them

    [caption id="attachment_8541" align="alignleft" width="300"] Ice dam formation graphic[/caption]

The icicles hanging from the eaves of your home may look beautiful and the kids may enjoy playing with them but they spell danger for your home. They are caused by ice melt as a result of poor insulation of your roof heating up the snow sitting there. That snow on your roof melts but as it gets to the less warm parts of your roof near the eaves, it refreezes and causes whats known as an ice dam. The ice dam does what its name implies: dams up more of that melting water and prevents it from flowing off the roof. Instead, it pools behind the ice and seeps under your shingles, causing water damage to the woodwork below and soaking your foam insulation, making it a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

Tom Silva with This Old House holds a Q&A about getting rid of ice dams and how to prevent them from forming in the first place.

The best way to stop ice damming is to keep the entire roof as cold as the eaves. Ventilating the underside of the roof, insulating the attic floor, and plugging air leaks are all worthwhile steps to take.
