"We're really pleased with the excellent work done by your crew. They were fast, efficient and easy to work with. Our garage is not flooding for the first time in six years thanks to the new down spout and paintwork."

  • ABC News & Yahoo Join Forces

There has been a lot of talk in the newsroom about ABC News teaming up with another news network, but the announcement today is not what people were expecting. ABC News has partnered up with Yahoo, broadcasting the news together. Jeff Bercovici of Forbes discusses further:

For years, talk has simmered about a possible merger between CNN and either ABC News or CBS News. CNN would provide the journalistic muscle, and the broadcast network would bring reach while paring down its own newsgathering costs.

A version of that is happening, but it’s not with CNN and it works the other way around. This morning, ABC and Yahooannounced a wide-ranging “online alliance.” The two will share content and talent across a variety of platforms, integrate their key news bureaus and co-produce several new series for what they say will be a combined audience of more than 100 million U.S. web users. “This is an audience the size of the Super Bowl audience,” said ABC News president Ben Sherwood at a press conference.

In this deal, it’s ABC that primarily supplies the talent — as it signaled by marshaling Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and Christiane Amanpour all to attend the press event — and Yahoo that brings the reach, with an online audience about four times the size of ABC’s.

That raises the question of whether Yahoo, which over the last several years has ramped up its investments in original news reporting and video production, sees this partnership as a way to diminish its content-generation costs. Following the firing of CEO Carol Bartz, the internet giant is conducting a strategic review, and all options appear to be on the table, including a sale or full-scale merger.
